Like the early G-Shock models, it has a screw-lock case back and is one of the only current G-Shocks, along with the digital Frogman and GMW-B5000, with this type of build. That said, the Bluetooth standard is already longer in use than I expected it to be, so it might be the norm for years to come (and be supported). Well, it has nothing of the specs (no solar, no bluetooth, the small display is terrible), but it has all the looks.

It will be my fourth 5000, all previously and regretfully sold due to a mix of failing eyesight and dial readability. I am a kid of the 1980s, and although I had some watches before, the first watches I bought myself (being a kid) was a digital Casio W-14 in 1986 or so. I, however, do not live in Europe, and so I’m limited to JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) online retailers.I had to perform surgery on the watch not too long ago and used a donor W-14 to swap the movement and put some fresh batteries inside. The bracelet is straightforward to resize yourself, using two small pins to push the spring-loaded pins inside a link and then gently remove the entire link from the next. The tones for using the pushers can be turned on or off while keeping the tones for alarms and timer active. I own a number of automatic watches, but if I functionally need to wear the most accurate watch with the most useful features. And the readability of the inverse display… Then the steel GMW-B5000D – oh boy it has everything, solar, bluetooth, the correct display.

But my tried-and-true workhorse DW-5600, while perfectly functional, lacked whatever it was that makes the experience of wearing a watch pleasurable. And of course, the purpose of the Casio G-Shock, or named G-Steel as well, GST-W130L is a totally different one than that of a Grand Seiko. The screw-back structure is considered special because the original G-Shock DW-5000C and other early G-Shock models were screw-backs, unlike most of the 5600 models of today that have a resin inner case and a case back secured by four screws.

Shipped within an hour, some reviews don’t make positive reading but will make judgement on we the coming days based on my own experience. I then went with the GW-5600 that linked through to my iPhone which I quite liked - but I still hankered after the simplicity of the self contained GW-5000. They do look nice…For me it certainly was, I picked up the 5610 but didn’t really like the colours. Then the new ‘U’ version came out and I bought the GW-5610U discounted to see if the changes made any real difference.
